This is a card that shows loss in all of its forms. The figure in it dominates the card, looking at the three spilled cups without seeing the two that still stand behind them. For all that they see, their emotions have the better of them for now.
This card can also be about past mistake. It can mean there is something to be learned from the greater pains in one's past. There is a time when the cups in the card both before the person and behind will be acknowledged. The suit of cups is about emotions. This case is where one must face and grow from their pains. Once the loss has been dealt with, there will be something revealed about the situation that one can appreciate. Remember that this card is much akin to an old saying "It is always darkest before the dawn". Loss is something that is part of life but it is a catalyst for change. For whatever was lost there must be an emotional struggle to glean even the smallest bit of a lesson from the experience. This is a long process and the card shows this as it best can with the two remaining cups.
